This new Netflix documentary executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama documents the fight for the rights of the disabled, a struggle beginning in the 1960s and spearheaded by many former campers of Camp Jened, a Catskills camp for youth with disabilities. "Lost Girls" filmed in several East End locales in fall 2018, including Kenney's Beach in Southold (the film's setting for Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach), nearby Leeton Drive and Kenneys Road, and the Mattituck Motel. Oscar-nominated actress Amy Ryan ("Gone Baby Gone," "The Office," "Birdman") stars as Gilgo victim Shannan Gilbert's mother, Mari, who spearheaded a public pressure campaign after her daughter went missing in May 2010 and became a face of the push for justice in the case. Renowned documentarian Liz Garbus ("What Happened, Miss Simone?") makes her narrative feature filmmaking debut with this dramatization of the unsolved Gilgo Beach murders.
